Workers Comp & Unemployment Insurance

Register once with DWS, understand the UI and workers’ compensation decisions, and keep required reports current

On this page

Wyoming uses one Department of Workforce Services registration to determine whether a business owes unemployment insurance, workers' compensation, or both. The programs remain separate after registration, with different coverage decisions, rates, and reporting duties.

Start after the business is formed and has an EIN. If this setup is for an internship, finish it before applying for the DWS Internship Grant.

Register

Give DWS enough information to decide which employment accounts the business needs.

Gather the details

Have the legal business name, entity type, EIN, owner information, business activity, work locations, expected first payroll date, and estimated wages ready. DWS uses the business activity to assign workers' compensation classifications and rates.

If the business does not have an EIN, use the WyoHub EIN guide or apply free through the official IRS EIN page.

Submit one registration

Open WYUI. Under Employer Services, choose Register New Business with DWS. This is the joint application for unemployment insurance and workers' compensation.

  • Save a copy of the questionnaire before submitting when possible.
  • Save the Registration Summary as a PDF.
  • Watch WYUI and the mail for separate DWS notices.

Read the official DWS new-employer instructions.

Read both determinations

DWS decides UI liability and workers' compensation coverage separately. Do not assume that receiving one account number means the other program is active. Keep every notice because it states the account status, assigned rate, classification, and reporting start date.

File and pay

Follow the notices for each active account. The two programs do not automatically share the same filing requirement.

Follow each schedule

Begin filing when DWS activates the account and assigns a reporting period. Submit every required return by its due date. If an active account requires a report for a zero-payroll quarter, file the zero report rather than skipping it.

An initial registration alone does not prove that every business owes both reports. Use the account notices and WYUI task list as the source for what your business must file.

Report unemployment wages

For an active UI account, report employee wages and pay the contribution calculated from the business's assigned rate. Rates vary by employer and industry, so do not substitute a generic percentage.

Review the official UI employer guidance and quarterly due dates.

Report workers' compensation wages

Report covered payroll under the classification and rate DWS assigned. A business's workers' compensation cost depends on its work, covered workers, and payroll. Confirm coverage before extra-hazardous work begins.

Use the DWS wage-reporting and coverage guidance for owner elections, exclusions, and covered wages.

Keep the records

Keep DWS notices, account numbers, classifications, rate notices, quarterly reports, payment confirmations, payroll registers, and employee wage records together. Reconcile the WYUI totals to payroll before each submission.

Handle changes

Update DWS when the facts behind its original determination change.

Add the first employee

If DWS did not activate UI because the business had no employees, contact UI Employer Help when the first employee is hired. Confirm the effective date, assigned rate, first report, and any wages that must be included.

Continue with the hiring and payroll guide for federal forms, payroll, and Wyoming new-hire reporting.

Decide owner coverage

Owners are not automatically covered by workers' compensation in every business structure. Sole proprietors, partners, LLC members, and corporate officers may be able to elect coverage in writing. Treat that election as a separate decision from employee coverage.

Resolve an issue

For unemployment-insurance account questions, use the official UI contact page or call 307-235-3217. For workers' compensation questions, call 307-777-6763 or review the DWS employer page.

Businesses preparing for the internship grant should also compare their status with the official DWS Internship Grant requirements.
